Honoring Loss Through Ceremony

Posted · Add Comment

Many of you also are aware that this weekend marks the 10th year anniversary of September 11. For those of you in Washington DC, the energy is palpable. It is at this time, that I am reminded about loss in general, and how the grief that often accompanies loss can be overwhelming.

In our society, we often don’t allow for the proper honoring of loss, be it people, situations, relationships or even material items. The notion of “moving on” or overanalyzing the “root cause” are often overemphasized, yet there is little room to honor the messages and lessons that come with the dark emotions we experience when we are faced with loss. Many avoid the topic all together, or stuff the emotions somewhere deep inside. Others wear them on their sleeves. Some are depressed, others are confused. Yet none of these ways are effective at getting us back to balance, accepting our emotions for what they are and honoring them in a way that brings clarity, peace, and more love into our hearts.

When I lost my sister Sabrina over 6 years ago, I did not have the mechanisms to deal with loss and the emotions and feelings that were accompanied by it. Today, I am very clear about what I can do to move through the feelings that come up when I experience loss much more gracefully, and I have specific ways to allow myself to receive the gifts and lessons I received as part of the process.

If you would like to explore additional ways of healing your grid and working through loss, reach out. Don’t isolate yourself. There is no shame in grief, depression or even suicidal thoughts. Just reach out. You might just meet the person who is willing to help you through this time.

With Love and Gratitude for being part of my Community,

~Sara
